The Penobscot Nation, also known as Penawahpkekeyak, or the people of the place of the white rocks, has lived in its ancestral homeland within the drainage area of the Penobscot River and its numerous lakes, ponds, and tributaries since time immemorial.

As proud riverine people, the Penobscot people's culture, society, and epistemology are all deeply anchored in their strong connection with the river, which is the source of life. For Penobscot people, the river habitat continues to be a vital source of sustenance, medicine, connection, fulfillment, and spirituality. They continue to fish, hunt, gather, and travel on the same river that has provided for their people for thousands of years, and they pass these ancient practices on to the next generation.

More than 4,900 acres of reservation land, including more than 200 islands in the Penobscot River, make up the Penobscot Nation's territory. Additionally, the Nation maintains and safeguards more than 90,000 acres of trust land. As of the 2020 Tribal Census, 2,398 members are enrolled.
